<p>So I decided to do it: I applied for <a href="http://twitter.com/job.html?jvi=oBbkVfwL,Job" target="_blank">Twitter&#8217;s Government Liaison job</a>.</p>
<p>Despite how much I&#8217;ve shat on government in the past, I&#8217;m really excited about the prospect of being &#8220;the Twitter guy&#8221; in DC. I have a lot of fun on Twitter. I like the short, true-to-life conversational aspect of the form. Twitter is such an ideal, simple cannon for quick, bite-sized bombs of <em><strong>AWESOME</strong></em>. All of us peeps in DC need a little more <em><strong>AWESOME</strong></em>, and I see Twitter as an objective delivery device more and more every day.</p>
<p>Now, this is a public policy position. It&#8217;s obvious from the job description that Twitter wants to develop an influential presence amongst policymakers in our fair government. There is a huge opportunity here to build some connective tissue between legislators, policymakers, commercial folks, a host of non-governmental organizations, state and local government, and <em>citizens</em>. I want to show Congress how <em><strong>AWESOME</strong></em> we can make our global communities. I want to show people some of the <em><strong>AWESOME</strong></em> things happening in government they never get to see or hear about. I want to connect with more people, more often, mo&#8217; bettah.</p>
<p>Can Twitter provide that connective tissue? You bet your ass. And for those of you following me on Twitter, you know how much I love it. Twitter is <em><strong>AWESOME</strong></em>. It is insanely great, to use <a class="zem_slink" title="Umair Haque" rel="homepage" href="http://bubblegeneration.com/">Umair Haque</a>&#8216;s manifesto. I want to show more people how to use it to help them achieve great things. <em>That&#8217;s</em> why I&#8217;ve put my hat into the ring for Twitter&#8217;s Government Liaison job.</p>
<p>But who just applies for a job and leaves it to fate? Not this guy.</p>
<p>I would LOVE having people&#8217;s support on this. If this isn&#8217;t worth doing big and <em><strong>AWESOME</strong></em>, it ain&#8217;t worth doing. So I&#8217;m asking for YOUR HELP. Here&#8217;s what we&#8217;ve gotta do:</p>

<p>I&#8217;ll start churning out thoughts, discussion, pingbacks, and other commentary that&#8217;s beginning to surface about Twitter&#8217;s entry into the gov arena here at <em>Must. Be. <strong>AWESOME!!! </strong></em>Campaign Headquarters. To start, check out <a href="https://twitter.com/AndrewPWilson" target="_blank">Andrew Wilson&#8217;s</a> <a href="http://andrewpwilson.posterous.com/top-10-requests-for-the-new-government-liaiso" target="_blank">Top 10 Request for the New Twitter Gov Liaison</a>. I&#8217;ll comment specifically on Andrew&#8217;s call to action in a subsequent post. Wouldn&#8217;t it be SUPERCOOL if this started as a simple job application but BLEW UP into a movement of some kind?</p>
<p>There&#8217;s probably someone insanely more qualified for this job, but <em><strong>I WANT IT</strong></em>. I want it like I want <em>OASIS TO GET BACK TOGETHER</em>. Like I want <em>JOHN LENNON TO COME BACK FROM THE DEAD AND DO BATTLE WITH SARAH PALIN</em>. This could be SO. COOL.</p>
<p>I hope you&#8217;re as excited about it as I am.</p>

<p>I could totally do this. It&#8217;s actually the one thing that sounds insanely fun about working in DC: showing government folks how they can use Twitter for <em><strong>AWESOME</strong></em> purposes. Connecting legislators to their constituents (and each other). Connecting soldiers with families. <em>Connecting</em>. <em><strong>CONNECTING</strong></em>.</p>
<p>Even though I&#8217;m already gainfully employed and stretched thinner than <a class="zem_slink freebase/en/plastic_man" title="Plastic Man" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plastic_Man">Plastic Man</a> in a God-sized tug-o-war&#8230; I am <em>really</em> giving some serious thought to applying for this gig.</p>
<p>What do y&#8217;all think??? Should I go for it?</p>

<p>I never got a chance to blog about <a href="http://darwyncooke.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Darwyn Cooke</a>&#8216;s lecture at <a href="http://americanart.si.edu/calendar/event/?key=4537&amp;date=2010-01-30" target="_blank">The Smithsonian American Art Museum</a> a couple months ago during the Snowmageddon. Instead, I thought I&#8217;d share a couple of the notes I furiously typed into my iPhone during the event and some pics I managed to snap. Apologies ahead: I own a first gen iPhone 3G and the camera sucks, so picture quality is kinda meh.</p>
<blockquote><p>He speaks with a gravelly voice, like the chief of a newspaper or a <a class="zem_slink" title="Parker: The Hunter (Richard Stark's Parker)" rel="amazon" href="http://www.amazon.com/Parker-Hunter-Richard-Starks/dp/1600104932%3FSubscriptionId%3D0G81C5DAZ03ZR9WH9X82%26tag%3Dzemanta-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D1600104932">Parker</a>-like character from a film noir. He&#8217;s reed thin and possessed of a certain class, as if he&#8217;s living in the same &#8217;60s of which he so adoringly speaks. He wears a crisp suit and looks comfortable and smooth.</p></blockquote>

He&#8217;s visibly awed by the legendary writer&#8217;s effect on him, how Westlake became the wonderful person Cooke always hoped he&#8217;d be. His voice cracks when he mentions Westlake, and his droopy, hound dog face grows longer. There&#8217;s much love in this man.</p></blockquote>

<blockquote><p>Cooke&#8217;s 1960s is chock full of art, where furniture and cars are individual masterpieces along with typography, book covers, and more. To Cooke, things just <em>looked good</em> in the &#8217;60s&#8230; as opposed to the boring little metal boxes people drive around in today.</p></blockquote>

<p style="text-align: left;">One of the coolest personal experiences I&#8217;ve had of late involved meeting and hanging with a bunch of cats from <a class="zem_slink" title="Palantir Technologies" rel="homepage" href="http://www.palantirtech.com">Palantir Technologies</a>, a Silicon Valley-based company that rocks a pretty cool data analysis tool. I&#8217;ve known about their software for some time, and I&#8217;ve heard good things about their products and services from some of their clients in the Intel Community and DOD. What I had not experienced, however, was Palantir&#8217;s <strong><em>AWESOME</em></strong> corporate culture.</p>
<p>I met Palantir&#8217;s Drew and Jon at the <a href="http://www.gov2expo.com/gov2expo2010" target="_blank">Gov 2.0 Expo</a> in DC, where Palantir had spared no expense in setting up the biggest and baddest-ass booth in the entire expo hall. Instead of developing the same old tired convention booth marketing concept, Palantir had designed a cool little area in which to simply hang out and get to know their people. Drew described it as their &#8220;mullet booth: business in front, party in back.&#8221; While they flaunted the customary multiple widescreens on which to demo the Palantir system, the real draw of the booth was the pleather couches and full-on Wii gaming setup they had going on behind it. Oh yeah, and they were serving their visitors complementary beer. <em>Motherfucker, <strong>JAM</strong></em>.</p>
<p>What Drew &amp;  Jon showed me was a corporate culture that valued their people&#8217;s <em><strong>AWESOME</strong></em> way more than their products and sales of their products. As I learned, Palantir is all about its people. They let their teams self-organize to solve problems, and they provide tons of on-site perks that enable a creative, fun atmosphere. I got the chance to see this culture of <em><strong>AWESOME</strong></em> in action when I got invited to Palantir Night Live at Palantir&#8217;s Tysons Corner office last night.</p>

Nope. Just Palantir&#39;s AWESOME kitchen, complete with daily catering menu for its peeps.</p></div>
<p>Every month, Palantir Night Live features a rad speaker in the national security, intelligence, tech, or other related community that Palantir touches. Last night it was <a class="zem_slink freebase/en/michael_chertoff" title="Michael Chertoff" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Chertoff">Michael Chertoff</a>, former Secretary of Homeland Security and <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eG4QwoP_Y4M" target="_blank">Skeletor</a> lookalike. The event is a social one and underlies a key facet of Palantir&#8217;s people-based marketing strategy. The draw of this event has little if anything to do with the company&#8217;s products and <em>everything</em> to do with its culture. Palantir peeps are young, hip folks who enjoy socially building their business. So that means they value facilitating knowledge exchange (via <em><strong>AWESOME</strong></em> catering and bar service) amongst a variety of people in their social <em>business</em> circle. You saw govvies rubbing shoulders with bloggers at Palantir Night Live.</p>
<p>I would be greatly interested in seeing the sales leads generated from events like these, if those are even metrics Palantir tracks for the success of its marketing events. As a social business, I see Palantir experimenting a lot more in non-traditional selling, i.e. allowing its community of interest (customers, personnel, etc) to recommend the company within existing trust networks.</p>

<p>How well this works for the company&#8217;s business development strategy remains to be seen, but I can attest to the <strong><em>AWESOME</em></strong>ness of the culture. Their focus on people really underscores the value of a social business. Palantir doesn&#8217;t even use a whole lot of social media marketing because their in-person social marketing works so well.</p>
<p>I should also mention that a couple of my former Detica colleagues got picked up by Palantir when that company was unceremoniously acquired and assfucked. One whose work I respect a great deal told me how much he loves his new job and how he feels great working for Palantir. It&#8217;s people like this guy whose trust is based more on social culture than the old work-reward hierarchy that tells me there is something imminently special about Palantir. I would LOVE to work with these cats if given the chance.</p>

<p><a href="http://darwyncooke.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Darwyn Cooke</a> will appear at the <a href="http://darwyncooke.blogspot.com/search?updated-max=2009-06-03T16:09:00-03:00&amp;max-results=7" target="_blank">Smithsonian American Art Museum on Saturday, January 30, 2010, at 4PM</a>. Cooke is by far the absolute BEST graphic artist working in the comics business today. Not only is his style reminiscent of the clean, inspired animation art of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruce_Timm" target="_blank">Bruce Timm</a>, but his composition on the page changes the way you think about sequential art. He will be reading a few selections from his most recent work, an adaptation of <a href="http://www.donaldwestlake.com/wks_bkex5.html" target="_blank">Donald Westlake</a>&#8216;s &#8220;Parker&#8221; novel <em><a href="http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/herocomplex/2009/07/the-hunter-darwyn-cooke-and-donald-westlake-pull-off-the-perfect-crime-.html" target="_blank">The Hunter</a> </em>(from which the panel to your left is taken; <a href="http://www.idwpublishing.com/previews/parker/" target="_blank">free preview at this link</a>). If you&#8217;re at all into modern art, comics, or animation, Cooke is a great talent to experience. You&#8217;ll find his paw prints all over some of the most <span style="text-decoration: line-through;">eponymous</span> prodigious artistic endeavors of the past 20 years, to include <em>Batman Beyond</em>, <em>Catwoman</em>, and <em>Jonah Hex</em>.</p>
<p>Your Intrepid Host of <strong><em>AWESOME </em></strong>will be at the Smithsonian for said event, easily identifiable with the massive <em><a href="http://www.dccomics.com/dcu/graphic_novels/?gn=5886" target="_blank">Absolute New Frontier</a></em> hardcover weighing me down as I cravenly strive to persuade Darwyn to give me a personalized head sketch. Prepare for nerdgasm.</p>

<p>I respond well to influencers who surprise me. I get bored easily by &#8220;normal&#8221; content, and I yearn for batshit insane, crazy <em>GONZO </em>stuff that will both entertain me and feed my head. Earlier this year, <a href="http://twitter.com/AndyNulman" target="_blank">Andy Nulman</a> wrote a book that totally did that: <em><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Pow-Right-Between-Eyes-Profiting/dp/0470405503" target="_blank">POW! Right Between the Eyes: Profiting from the Power of Surprise</a></em>.</p>
<p><img class="alignleft" title="pow" src="http://nsbblog.files.wordpress.com/2009/05/pow-nulman3.jpg" alt="" width="297" height="448" />Nulman really speaks to me. He&#8217;s loud. He dresses funny. He comes from a comedy background. He&#8217;s irreverent to the point of annoyance. But he&#8217;s wily enough to have figured out that there&#8217;s something to this surprise marketing thing, and through his book (and <a href="http://powrightbetweentheeyes.typepad.com/" target="_blank">accompanying blog</a>), he&#8217;s staked a claim as the purveyor of all things Surprise.</p>
<p>The book itself contains plenty of hardcore, actionable lessons that marketers, PR peeps, social business strategists, and others can use to inject a little craziness into their otherwise boring, stale, or usual campaigns. Nulman even spends a little time dissecting what surprise is on the emotional register and how the physical displays of surprise make one more susceptible to suggestion. He&#8217;s not a scientist by any means, and I believe from his stated research that it&#8217;s probably only Google-deep, but such an understanding of the science of surprise is just enough background for the reader. This is not an academic or scholarly read. It is an <em><strong>AWESOME</strong></em> one. Nulman wisely spends most of his print time focusing on the fun stuff.</p>
<p>Nulman uses his background in comedy as a launching point to analyze why traditional marketing sucks so bad and why crazy, gonzo tactics of the type he describes are so effective. I have long maintained that <em>entertainment </em>is the most effective way into a person&#8217;s good graces, and Nulman entertains the crap outta his readers. His writing style is fun, provocative, and completely in line with his stated purpose. I respect an author who so brazenly ignores many of the common rules of writing and blazes his own trail with his own voice. Nulman surprises you on every page, whether it&#8217;s a pithy remark about a competitor&#8217;s shit-ass marketing scheme or an entertaining analysis of a certain brand&#8217;s methods in surprise. Plus, in keeping with his theme, Nulman pulls out the stops with a really cool surprise ending to the book that catapults its engagement from the printed page to other media.</p>
<p>Some of Nulman&#8217;s passages may come off as self-aggrandizing and downright egotistical. That&#8217;s OK. Be ready for it. Embrace it. You have to accept that the guy who lives by The Art of Surprise is going to be a little shameless in the self-promotion department. While it can be tiring reading about all the cool things that have happened to Nulman that put him on this path, you will still learn some valuable lessons from his overhyped hyperbole.</p>
<p>One of the more interesting aspects of Nulman&#8217;s roll-out for <em>POW! </em>involved his blog, on which he wrote about Surprise and presented examples of Surprise marketing in action. For quite a while leading up to the book&#8217;s release, the blog was a great place to get real world studies (albeit brief ones) of what makes something an effective mechanism for Surprise. However, shortly after the book&#8217;s publication, Nulman began posting less&#8230; and less&#8230; until finally his regular content dried up to virtually nothing. <a href="http://powrightbetweentheeyes.typepad.com/pow_right_between_the_eye/2009/12/my-biggest-surprise-of-the-yearthe-end-of-pow.html" target="_blank">He has since admitted that he was unable to maintain the blog to any degree of regular value for his audience and thus decided to close up shop</a>. This became an interesting and value-laden lesson for me: using a blog as an experimentation ground for book content and then a marketing vehicle for that book has its advantages and disadvantages. Nulman sits at the other end of the spectrum from blogger-turned-author guys like<a href="http://www.trustagent.com/" target="_blank"> Chris Brogan and Julien Smith</a>, who not only developed multiple social media streams to promote and market their book <a href="http://www.facebook.com/trustagents?ref=ts" target="_blank">Trust Agents</a> but also continue to engage with people on those new and preexisting networks.</p>
<p>That criticism aside, <em>POW! Right Between the Eyes</em> is still an <em><strong>AWESOME </strong></em>book, business or otherwise. It&#8217;s filled full of good ideas to use if you&#8217;re a dirty influence peddler like myself, and it&#8217;s entertaining and fun to read if you&#8217;re not.</p>

<p>I just discovered this <strong><em>AWESOME </em></strong>new tool for identity management: <a href="http://hootsuite.com" target="_blank">HootSuite</a>. For social media users with multiple lifestreams, it is essential to your well-being.</p>

<p style="text-align: left;">You can tie your Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Ping.fm accounts into the tool and manage then using a variety of options. They just developed Twitter List support, which provides even more functionality. This would be an ideal tool for social media powerhouses who manage multiple Twitter identities. I&#8217;ve even set up a number of Twitter searches for specific hashtags and subjects that update continuously.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">There&#8217;s even an RSS reader from which you can pull in multiple feeds and organize according to your preferences. I haven&#8217;t monkeyed around with that one yet, and it looks cool, but I&#8217;m a diehard Google Reader user.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Also cool: a built-in URL shortener, an iPhone app (as yet untried), and built-in analytics tools with which one can use to measure each Twitter user, hash or other stream they&#8217;ve integrated into the tool.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Also <em><strong>AWESOME</strong></em>: there&#8217;s a bookmarklet (the &#8220;Hootlet&#8221;) that you can embed on your toolbar. As you browse, you can punch that thing and it launches a separate browser box that takes you instantly to a status update poster. You can choose your social media network here and choose to post a link to the page or media file you&#8217;re currently browsing or something completely unrelated. GREAT functionality for the power browser.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">I&#8217;ve been hesitant to adopt a third-party tool to manage my Twitter account primarily because the best of them are desktop downloads (<a href="http://seesmic.com/seesmic_desktop/" target="_blank">Seesmic</a>, <a href="http://tweetdeck.com/beta/" target="_blank">TweetDeck</a>). The great thing about HootSuite is that it&#8217;s all web-based. I can&#8217;t even <em>tell you</em> how handy it is to have one dashboard from which to manage my outgoing posts/tweets/updates. No more bullshit getting caught between my Twitter audiences and my (profanity-fearing) family networks on Facebook. HootSuite will be even more functional to me once they integrate other social networks I use like <a href="http://goodreads.com" target="_blank">Goodreads</a> (hint, hint).</p>

<p>I am a diehard DC Comics fan. I can remember all the way back to when my dad brought me to the E-Z Mart in Longview, Texas, and bought me my first few comics: a <em>Superman </em>comic; an old <em>Star Trek</em> adaptation; and <em><a href="http://dc.wikia.com/wiki/File:Legion_of_Super-Heroes_Vol_2_311.jpg" target="_blank">Legion of Super-Heroes</a></em><a href="http://dc.wikia.com/wiki/File:Legion_of_Super-Heroes_Vol_2_311.jpg" target="_blank"> #311</a>, the comic that forever changed my life and turned me into a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legion_of_Super-Heroes" target="_blank">Legion </a>fan.</p>
<p>That said, I have to give Superfly TNT props to Marvel for its <a href="http://marvel.com/digitalcomics/" target="_blank">Digital Comics subscription program</a>. I&#8217;ve grown lukewarm to the stories and shenanigans Marvel&#8217;s pulled over the years, such so that I barely pick up one or two series in print anymore. Because of this, I&#8217;ve missed out on a lot of stuff, and it&#8217;s great to go back through their digital archives and check out a lot of what I missed. Plus, at the price offered (~$40 on holiday discount for a year), I end up saving tons of cash on expensive hardcover collections I&#8217;d otherwise have to buy sight unseen. It&#8217;s the ultimate &#8220;try before you buy&#8221; program.</p>

<p>While there are some obvious gaps in the online archives (Marvel tends not to put a lot of new comics online, which I suppose makes sense from a business perspective), there are some pretty good runs on here. I recently finished reading Warren Ellis and Adi Granov&#8217;s six-part <em>Iron Man: Extremis</em>, and I&#8217;m glad I read it online instead of forking out the cash to buy a trade paperback. It was decent, but not up to the standards I expect of Ellis. But I don&#8217;t feel cheated about this since I acquired the story through the Digital Comics subscription.</p>
<p>The digital reader Marvel employs is a little clunky, and I find it crashes or slows down on browsers or systems it wasn&#8217;t designed for. Running it on an uncluttered Dell Latitude E5400 with a Chrome browser seems to work pretty well though.</p>
<p>Marvel&#8217;s foray into digital comics has had me thinking on the issue of comics distribution for the future. I tend to believe that comics are going to price themselves right out of the industry soon, so that only diehard fans pick up actual print books anymore. For periodical series to survive, companies must turn to digital distribution, where new audiences live. <a href="http://www.idwpublishing.com/" target="_blank">IDW Publishing</a> has stepped up their game in this arena considerably lately by <a href="http://www.idwpublishing.com/news/article/909/" target="_blank">publishing comics directly to the iPhone</a>.</p>
<p>This is good fodder for a future post on digital comics distro. More to follow.</p>

<p>Dude looks like he&#8217;s got so much rumbling around in his brain, rays of badassness might come flying out of his peepers.</p>
<p>Umair argues that the days of <em>innovation </em>are over. Innovation, in Umair&#8217;s estimation, is old hat and not inherently COOL ENOUGH to continue to be that shining beacon in the distance that we should all be striving for. Instead, we should be yearning for <em>AWESOMENESS</em>, which he describes thusly:</p>
<blockquote><p>Awesomeness happens when thick — real, meaningful — value is created by people who <strong>love </strong>what they do, added to <strong>insanely great stuff</strong>, and multiplied by communities who are delighted and inspired because they are authentically better off. <strong>[Emphasis mine.]</strong></p></blockquote>
<p>Putting all the other stuff aside, I want to hone in on the two things I highlighted above: <em>love</em> and <em>insanely great stuff</em>. Umair is right on the money in describing something that is <em><strong>AWESOME </strong></em>as something that has been born of love. It is often someone&#8217;s <em>passion </em>that produces anything of remarkable import.</p>
<p>From such love, insanely great stuff can come. I think this needs no further explanation. Plenty of <a href="http://lateralaction.com/articles/tyler-durden-innovation/" target="_blank">other</a> 21st century <a href="http://positivesharing.com/" target="_self">troubadour</a> <a href="http://gapingvoid.com/" target="_blank">poets</a> have said as much more eloquently than I.</p>
<p>Love + insanely great stuff = <em><strong>AWESOME</strong></em>. I can get behind that.</p>
<p>There is a GREAT conversation happening in the comments section of Umair&#8217;s post in which I highly encourage everyone to go participate. While I dig the guts of Umair&#8217;s manifesto, I still think he&#8217;s missed some things. Furthermore, many commenters &#8211; including quite a few bean-counting, butt-headed, bitch-assed defenders of Ye Olde Way Of Doing Things &#8211; have attacked him, pointing out his assertions&#8217; naivety and the mere GALL &#8211; <em><strong>GALL</strong></em>, I tell you &#8211; that Umair would use such a silly word like &#8220;awesomeness&#8221; to replace the sacred golden cow of Innovation.</p>
<p>Umair, like a true son of the Social Media Masses, responded that The Awesomeness Manifesto is open source. That means, <em><strong>YOU </strong></em>can go edit it. Don&#8217;t like the concept? <em><strong>FIX IT</strong></em>. Think of a better pillar of Awesomeness that Umair missed? <em><strong><a href="http://blogs.harvardbusiness.org/haque/2009/09/is_your_business_innovative_or.html" target="_blank">GET IN THERE</a></strong></em>.</p>
